About Pianist & Teacher Michelle Ayler
Michelle Ayler has grown MEA Piano Studio into one of Northern Virginia’s largest pre-college piano schools by maintaining a high degree of lesson quality, making the lessons fun and engaging for kids, and offering a competitive free trial period. She has been teaching piano lessons for 15+ years.
She received a diploma in piano from Duke Ellington School of the arts, and she received a B.A. in music composition from Radford University thereafter. She enjoys passing her piano, composition, and music theory on to her students. Please get in touch if you’d like to learn more about Michelle or sign up for a free trial lesson!
Washington D.C. Piano Lesson Options
If you are enrolling a preschooler in piano lessons for the first time, I will teach them in a private lesson format – I’ve found that the personalized approach leads to better results for my youngest beginners. If your child already has experience, private lessons are probably an ideal fit as well – we can determine their level, the best repertoire for them, and figure out their goals as the piano.
For elementary-aged beginners, I’ve found that our group lesson format is an excellent fit. Lessons are fun and engaging, include backtracks and multimedia, and they get to learn aside peers and new friends. The social setting introduces positive peer pressure, and students overcome their fear of playing in front of others at an early age.
Lastly, if you aren’t local or would rather stay at home, I do offer live online piano lessons for pre-college students. Just get in touch for more information, and we can find a time that works and check your internet connection.
Piano Lessons For Kids In Washington D.C.
I specialize in lessons for kids ages 4-17, and after teaching children for 15+ years, I know what kids respond to in piano lessons.
Firstly, my lessons and classes are age-appropriate. My younger kids enjoy activities away from the keyboard during lessons, we focus on concepts that they can understand and appreciate, and we lay the groundwork for a more in-depth piano education in the near future.
My elementary-aged students learn how to read notes, phrase music, play by ear, hear and repeat intervals, and more – I like to introduce music theory at a young age. They will also be able to meet new friends and piano-playing peers in group classes.
More advanced piano students will work with me on a 1-on-1 basis. We’ll find the right repertoire for their goals and needs, tackle advanced music theory, sight reading, and improvisational concepts, and prepare them for a future as a serious pianist or talented amateur.
What Will Your Child Learn In Piano Lessons In Washington D.C.?
I focus on teaching children the fundamentals of piano playing, giving them clear takeaways after each lesson, and equipping them to pursue different genres and playing outlets in the future.
I always make sure my students are strong readers – every pianist needs to be able to sight read in the future, and I want them to be able to teach themselves music if they would like. I also train the ear so students can repeat melodies, compose, and improvise.
Good technique is also important to me. Bad technique leads to pain or injuries in the future, and bad technique can also limit how fast a pianist is able to play. Music theory is also a big element of our lessons at MEA Piano Studio – students need to know what’s happening in the music, and it’s amazing how much more exciting music can be when it is no longer a mystery.
As far as materials are concerned, my beginning students use the Faber piano method, and I work with students to pick methods, exercises, and piano literature that will be enjoyable and helpful.

Why Take Piano Lessons in Washington D.C.
Children who take piano lessons enjoy a higher quality of life, in short. Learning piano will increase self-confidence, give them a necessary artistic outlet that they may not have otherwise, and provide an opportunity for them to connect and interact with others. You know how it is – so many adults wish they had taken piano lessons when they were younger, and it only gets harder to play the older you get.
I also take your commitment to the arts very seriously, and that’s why I’ve created curriculums that kids love – my goal is for your child to not want to quit piano lessons. I believe that piano playing can enrich anyone’s life, and I’m thrilled that you are considering MEA Piano Studio.
